SCHOOL FORMALS
How I want to remember it? And be remembered !!!!!!
This is going to be the one of the best nights of your young adult life.
It’s time to party and enjoy with your friends.
Some you will keep in contact with, some you may not see again for a long time
Make a good lasting impression.
You don’t want to be the talk of the party, for the wrong reasons.
Now for the fun stuff.....
FOR THE GIRLS:
THE DRESS………… The best thing to wear is something you feel good in, suits your body shape, height and complexion. There are some fabulous ready made designs to choose from – or if you are the creative type talk with a dressmaker about the style you want.
Remember, what goes under your dress can make or break the finished look.
That’s right I’m talking knickers and bra’s. There are plenty of places out there where you can find gorgeous undies and bra’s that won’t spoil the line of your dress. Also little lumps and bumps can be hidden with the right underwear. Trust me not everyone is a size 8, but with a well cut dress and the right undies you’ll feel great.
THE SHOES……… There’s a little bit of a shoe queen in all of us (it’s a girl thing) so go for something a bit more glamorous than what you have been wearing ( your school shoes).
If your wearing a cocktail length dress a shoe with a slightly higher heel and a few more sparkles will make your legs look fabulous. If your dress is floor length the heel height is not as important, but I’d still go for the sparkles. There are some wonderful shoes available out in the stores. Think about what time of year your formal is and buy your shoes in the right season. Spring/ Summer is the best time to buy strappy sandals. In winter the selection is not as good.
Wear your shoes around the house to break them in, otherwise your feet won’t take all the dancing you intend to do at the formal.
THE HAIR AND MAKEUP……… You want your hair to look great on the night. Sooooo start by keeping the ends trimmed, regular washing and conditioning long before THE BIG NIGHT OUT. Healthy hair doesn’t happen overnight ……………………… and well you know the rest.
When choosing a style think about the shape of your face, the length of your neck and the neckline of your dress.
What is going to be the most flattering style for you. Look in the latest magazines for some ideas.
WE HAVE A GREAT RANGE OF HAIR ACCESSORIES AND TIARAS IN THE ONLINE STORE.
Make-up is to enhance your natural beauty, so don’t overdo it.
You should look after your skin all the time, you know the cleanse, tone and moisturise routine. If your skin is in good condition your makeup will look even better. Don’t go lying on the beach and getting burnt, blotchy and peeling skin is not a good look at anytime.
Oh and every girls essential, waterproof mascara. You’ll be saying goodbye to friends you’ve know possibly from pre school days , so there is bound to be a tear or two and panda eyes are not a good look.
NOW THE FINISHING TOUCHES……. Necklace and earrings that will compliment your dress. This is another time when the length of your neck and the neckline of your dress need to be considered. Strapless dresses look better with a necklace that has a drop on it. This style can also give your neck a longer look. If you want to minimize your height or neck length a necklace without a drop is better.
It’s an elegant night out and your jewellery will give you that finished look.

A small evening bag is great to carry a few essentials such as:
- Mobile phone
- Lipstick for touch up (lots of photos will be taken)
- Tissues (for those teary moments)
- A safety pin and a couple of hairpins (for little emergencies)
- And if you have room a digital camera (to capture some great memories)
FOR THE BOYS
The boys generally have it easier when it comes to what to wear, but they definitely have it tougher when it comes to asking someone to go to the formal with. Unless you already have a girlfriend , you will have to ask someone you think you would enjoy going to the formal with.
WHAT TO WEAR………. A suit will look great on any guy. Once you have asked a partner to the formal find out what colour she is wearing and this will help you decide what colour suit to choose. You may want to co-ordinate the colour of your tie or (waistcoat if you want to wear one ) to match your partners dress.
There are plenty of suit hire businesses that can help you, so make use of them and ask questions. Don’t leave hiring your suit till the last minute, because you will only get a choice of what’s left over. Some suit hire places will hire shoes as well.
Although if you buy a pair of good shoes you may be able to wear them again for job interviews etc, possibly in the near future. If you buy a new pair of shoes, wear them a few times around the house so they are comfortable for the big night out.
HAIR………. So you don’t have to prepare as much as the girls, but trust me any female will appreciate a guy that is nicely dressed with hair that is clean and in some sort of style e.g recently trimmed (even if your hair long get rid of the split ends).
NOW THE FINISHING TOUCHES
THE LIMO
If you and a few friends decide you want to go to the formal in a limo……BOOK IT EARLY……..before they are all taken.
THE BUTTONHOLE AND CORSAGE
Talk to your partner to find out whether she would like a dress or wrist corsage. This is also when you have to know the colour of her dress so you can choose flowers to suit. Get your buttonhole made in the same flowers as the corsage. This is something else that is best done early to avoid disappointment.
ETTIQUETTE ………. When you arrive at your function destination the guys should get out of the limo first and offer their hand to their partner to assist them in getting out of the vehicle. Girls remember to keep your knees together when getting out of the car because generally there will be someone taking photos and you don’t want the first picture of you to be showing your underwear.
PRE’S AND POST’S………..
PRE’s are great for groups of friends to get together to begin their night out.
It is probably the only time your parents can take a photo of you and your partner together and then some with your closest friends. Parents are very proud of their kids and they love to capture this moment in their lives when they are all dressed up. Remember this is just the beginning of a great night of your lives. So moderation is the key.
POST’S seem to be a part of the experience, but once again
MODERATION IS THE KEY. Parents like their kid’s to have a good time, but they want you to do it with safety and responsibility. Let them know where you will be and if your going to be home later than you told them LET THEM KNOW (a quick phone call is all it takes).
If you think you are getting into a situation that does not feel right, trust your instinct and get out.
Look after each other. These people are your friends and the word friend means supporter.
